The Region
Playa Zancudo, a paradise in the rough, is located on the eastern shore of the Golfo Dulce in extreme southern Costa Rica near the Pacific Ocean. The largest town in the region is Golfito, which is north of Playa Zancudo across Rio Coto River. Zancudo itself is a small fishing community of about 325 friendly Costa Ricans along with a group of assorted expatriots. This slowly developing area has much to offer for the laid back traveler.
Map of Costa Rica
Map of Golfo Dulce region Because access to this area is still relatively limited, tourism in this corner of Costa Rica has remained in the infancy stage. Luckily, for us, you will find Zancudo refreshingly void of fastfood restaurants and commercial hotels. The brown sandy beaches stretch for miles with unspoiled views as far as the eye can see. The vegetation along the beach is mostly coconut and almond trees. Wildlife and sealife can be easily spotted at all times of the year.
Brief History
The port of Golfito, north of Zancudo, was built by the United Fruit Company in the late 1930's and basically benefited much of the local people nearby. At that time, Zancudo's beaches were often strewn with excess bananas that washed down from the Rio Coto river. Inland pig farms thrived during the fruit company's heyday with access to cheap bananas and coconuts. As more foreigners came to settle in Zancudo, the nearby pig farms vanished. Today, Zancudo is noted for its small community atmosphere with thatched-roof houses, small sodas, and a variety of restaurants offering fresh seafood, vegetables and fruits. Playa Zancudo lends itself well to a relaxing body and soul experience.
