Brief History
The port of Golfito, north of Zancudo, was built by the United Fruit Company in the late 1930's and basically
benefited much of the local people nearby. At that time, Zancudo's beaches were often strewn with excess bananas
that washed down from the Rio Coto river. Inland pig farms thrived during the fruit company's heyday with access
to cheap bananas and coconuts. As more foreigners came to settle in Zancudo, the nearby pig farms vanished. Today, Zancudo
is noted for its small community atmosphere with thatched-roof houses, small sodas, and a variety of restaurants offering
fresh seafood, vegetables and fruits. Playa Zancudo lends itself well to a relaxing body and soul experience.
